P1257 Code: Supercharger System Overboost

๐ŸŸ  Moderate severity ยท drivable

Drivable, but avoid hard acceleration โ€” too much boost can damage the engine.

What P1257 means

The engine computer measured more supercharger boost (intake air pressure) than it allows. A bypass valve normally vents excess pressure when boost gets too high, and when that valve or the parts that control it fail, boost climbs out of range and the computer stores P1257. This code is most common on supercharged General Motors engines like the 3.8L V6.

How to fix it

FixDIY?Typical cost
Inspect the bypass valve and free it if it is stuckYes$10โ€“150
Check and repair vacuum lines to the bypass valveYes$10โ€“60
Replace the bypass valve control solenoidYes$40โ€“150
Replace the MAP sensorYes$40โ€“120
Have a shop inspect the supercharger if the valve is damagedMechanic$200โ€“600

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a P1257 code?
Yes, but keep the pedal gentle. If overboost continues during hard acceleration it can damage the engine, so get it diagnosed soon.
What is the most common cause of P1257?
A stuck supercharger bypass valve, often from a faulty solenoid or a vacuum leak that keeps the valve closed.
How much does it cost to fix a P1257?
Usually $10โ€“$150 for vacuum lines, a solenoid, or a MAP sensor. Shop labor for the bypass valve or supercharger work runs higher.
