P0117 on a Jeep: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
Safe to drive, but the engine may run rich and the fans may run constantly until the sensor circuit is repaired.
What P0117 means on a Jeep
On a Jeep, P0117 means the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is sending a low-voltage signal that the computer reads as the engine being very hot. The sensor is usually threaded into the thermostat housing or cylinder head, and a shorted sensor or signal wire is the typical cause. The computer may add fuel and run the cooling fans full time while the code is active.
Is P0117 common on Jeeps?
P0117 is most common on higher-mileage Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, where engine-bay heat, dirt, and moisture attack the sensor connector. The 3.6L Pentastar engine, found in many Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, is a frequent place to see this code.
Commonly reported on: Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Renegade.
