P0420 on a Ford: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
A Ford with P0420 can usually be driven short-term, but a clogged converter will eventually hurt power and fuel economy.
What P0420 means on a Ford
On a Ford, P0420 means the downstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 reports the catalytic converter isn't scrubbing the exhaust well enough. The PCM compares the upstream and downstream sensors, and if they track each other too closely it sets P0420. Fords with V6 and V8 engines have two banks, so this code points to the driver's-side bank.
Is P0420 common on Fords?
P0420 is common on F-150s, Escapes, and Explorers with higher mileage. Ford's oxygen sensor wiring and connectors can corrode, and the catalytic converters on several 3.5L V6 models are known to fail.
Commonly reported on: F-150, Escape, Explorer, Fusion.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Worse fuel economy than usual
- Rotten-egg smell from the exhaust
- Often no change in how it drives
Common causes
- most common: Worn catalytic converter on bank 1
- common: Faulty downstream O2 sensor or damaged wiring
- common: Exhaust leak before the downstream sensor
- less common: Misfire or rich fuel condition that damaged the converter
How to fix it
| Fix | DIY? | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect O2 sensor wiring and the exhaust for damage or leaks | Yes | $50โ200 |
| Test and replace the downstream O2 sensor if faulty | Yes | $60โ200 |
| Replace the catalytic converter on bank 1 | Mechanic | $600โ2400 |
