P0171 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
🟠 Moderate severity · drivable
A BMW with P0171 is drivable short-term, but a lean mixture can cause misfires and should be fixed soon.
What P0171 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0171 means bank 1 is running lean — too much air or not enough fuel — and the DME has hit its fuel correction limit. BMW's computer uses the MAF sensor, oxygen sensors, and fuel trims, and a lean mixture that persists sets P0171.
Is P0171 common on BMWs?
P0171 is common on 3 Series, 5 Series, and X3s with higher mileage. BMWs are notorious for vacuum leaks from cracked crankcase ventilation hoses and intake boots, and the MAF sensor can also fail.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
