P0401 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
Safe to drive short term, but on a diesel the sooty EGR valve can eventually cause limp mode, so plan the repair soon.
What P0401 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0401 means the engine computer detected too little exhaust gas flowing through the EGR system. On BMW this code is mostly a diesel-engine problem: soot from the exhaust cakes onto the EGR valve and clogs the EGR cooler, cutting off flow.
Is P0401 common on BMWs?
P0401 is common on BMW diesel models like the 320d, 525d, and X5 diesel, where the EGR valve and cooler clog with soot over time. Gasoline BMWs rarely use an EGR valve, so on a petrol car a P0401 should be double-checked against the actual stored fault.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Reduced fuel economy on a diesel
- Possible limp mode on heavy EGR failure
Common causes
- most common: EGR valve caked with soot
- common: Clogged EGR cooler
- common: Carbon buildup in the EGR intake passages
- less common: Faulty EGR position sensor or actuator
How to fix it
| Fix | DIY? | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Remove and clean the EGR valve | Yes | $50โ150 |
| Replace the EGR valve | Mechanic | $300โ700 |
| Replace or flush the clogged EGR cooler | Mechanic | $500โ1200 |
