P0113 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ข Low severity ยท drivable
Safe to drive โ the engine just gets a wrong intake air temperature reading, which may cause slightly rich running.
What P0113 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0113 means the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor is reporting a high-voltage, open-circuit signal. On most BMWs the IAT sensor is built into the hot-film air mass meter (the MAF sensor), so the code usually points to that meter or its connector. The engine may run slightly rich until it is fixed.
Is P0113 common on BMWs?
P0113 is common on BMWs as the air mass meter ages and its sensing element gets contaminated with oil and dirt from the intake. Connector problems and wiring damage are also seen on older models. It is a sensor fault, not an engine failure.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Slightly rich running or worse fuel economy
- Possible hesitation or rough idle
- Often no noticeable symptoms
Common causes
- most common: Faulty air mass meter with built-in IAT sensor
- common: Contaminated hot-film sensing element
- common: Loose or corroded connector
- less common: Damaged wiring to the sensor
How to fix it
| Fix | DIY? | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Clean the air mass meter with MAF cleaner | Yes | $10โ15 |
| Replace the air mass meter | Yes | $150โ350 |
| Repair the connector or wiring | Mechanic | $80โ200 |
