P0521 on a Subaru: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
Check the oil level before driving, and stop the engine immediately if the oil pressure warning stays on.
What P0521 means on a Subaru
On a Subaru, P0521 means the oil pressure sensor is reporting a reading outside the range the engine computer expects. The sensor sits on top of the boxer engine near the alternator and can fail or develop a small leak. Subaru's computer sets the code when the pressure reading does not track engine speed the way it should.
Is P0521 common on Subarus?
P0521 shows up on older Subarus, especially Outbacks and Foresters with EJ and FB engines, where the oil pressure sensor is a known wear item and a leaking sensor is common because it sits in a hot, oily spot. Subaru engines also have a reputation for oil consumption, so the oil level should be checked whenever this code appears.
Commonly reported on: Outback, Forester, Impreza, Crosstrek.
