P0521 on a Lexus: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
Check the oil level before driving, and stop the engine if the oil pressure warning stays on.
What P0521 means on a Lexus
On a Lexus, P0521 means the oil pressure sensor is reporting a reading outside the range the engine computer expects for the current engine speed. Lexus engines share Toyota's reliable oiling systems, so the sensor itself is usually the issue rather than real low pressure. The computer sets the code when the signal does not track RPM properly.
Is P0521 common on Lexuss?
P0521 is uncommon on Lexus models but appears on higher-mileage ES, RX, and IS cars as the sensor and its wiring age, and heat near the sensor can make the connector brittle. Real oil pressure problems are rare on Lexus engines, so most cases end up being the sensor.
Commonly reported on: ES, RX, GX, IS.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Oil pressure warning comes on
- Intermittent or erratic pressure readings
- Engine runs normally otherwise
Common causes
- most common: Faulty oil pressure sensor
- common: Aged or brittle sensor wiring and connector
- less common: Low oil level
- rare: Worn oil pump or clogged pickup
How to fix it
| Fix | DIY? | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Replace the oil pressure sensor | Yes | $80โ250 |
