P0141 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ข Low severity ยท drivable
The car drives normally because the heater only speeds up sensor warm-up, but it can fail an emissions test with the light on.
What P0141 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0141 means the heater circuit inside the bank 1 downstream oxygen (lambda) sensor has failed. BMW calls these sensors lambda sensors, and the downstream unit only checks converter operation, so the engine still runs and drives normally.
Is P0141 common on BMWs?
P0141 is fairly common on higher-mileage BMWs such as the 3 Series and 5 Series, where the sensor heater element burns out with age. BMW typically uses Bosch or NTK sensors, which cost a bit more than average to replace.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on
- Possible failed emissions test
- Slightly reduced fuel economy
- No noticeable change in how the car drives
Common causes
- most common: Burnt-out heater element inside the sensor
- common: Blown oxygen sensor heater fuse
- common: Damaged wiring or connector at the sensor
- less common: Corrosion inside the sensor connector
How to fix it
| Fix | DIY? | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Test the heater circuit with a multimeter to confirm the fault before buying parts | Yes | $10โ60 |
| Replace the bank 1 sensor 2 lambda sensor | Yes | $80โ250 |
| Repair damaged wiring or the sensor connector | Yes | $30โ150 |
