P0172 on a GMC: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost

🟠 Moderate severity · drivable

You can drive short-term, but the rich mixture wastes fuel and can damage the catalytic converter, so get it fixed soon.

What P0172 means on a GMC

On a GMC, P0172 means bank 1 is running rich — too much fuel or not enough air in the mixture. The GM computer has already pulled fuel out as far as it can and still sees a rich condition, so it sets the code.

Is P0172 common on GMCs?

P0172 is seen on GMC trucks and SUVs with higher mileage, most often on the Sierra, Yukon, and Terrain. A contaminated MAF sensor and aging oxygen sensors are the usual causes. Leaking fuel injectors can also push the mixture rich.

Commonly reported on: Sierra, Yukon, Terrain, Acadia.
