P0172 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
🟠 Moderate severity · drivable
You can drive short-term, but the rich mixture wastes fuel and can damage the catalytic converter, so fix it soon.
What P0172 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0172 means bank 1 is running rich — the engine is getting too much fuel or not enough air. The BMW computer has already trimmed fuel to its limit and still sees a rich mixture, so it sets P0172.
Is P0172 common on BMWs?
P0172 shows up on BMWs with higher mileage, especially the 3 Series, 5 Series, and X3. BMW MAF sensors and oxygen sensors are common wear items and frequent causes of rich codes. Leaking fuel injectors can also be at fault.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
