P0441 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
You can keep driving, but get it checked soon โ a purge flow fault can cause fuel smells and, in some cases, a rough idle.
What P0441 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0441 means the EVAP system is not purging fuel vapors from the charcoal canister at the flow rate the engine computer expects. The purge valve that routes those vapors into the intake is likely sticking, slow, or leaking. The engine usually runs fine, so the check engine light is often the only sign.
Is P0441 common on BMWs?
P0441 shows up on BMWs as the purge valve and its rubber hoses age and crack, especially on higher-mileage 3 Series, 5 Series, and X models. The valve can stick closed, which stops vapor flow, or stick open, which lets in too much. It is an emissions fault, not a sign of engine trouble.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
