P0121 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
A BMW with P0121 usually still runs, but it may enter limp mode and limit power until the throttle issue is fixed.
What P0121 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0121 means the throttle position sensor built into the electronic throttle body is reporting a reading that doesn't match what the engine computer expects. BMW uses drive-by-wire throttles, so the sensor is part of the throttle body assembly rather than a separate replaceable part. When the signal doesn't match, the DME limits engine power to protect the engine.
Is P0121 common on BMWs?
P0121 shows up on BMWs with the electronic throttle, especially the 3 Series and 5 Series from the 2000s. Carbon buildup in the intake and a worn throttle body are the usual causes, and many cases are fixed with a throttle body cleaning and relearn rather than a full replacement.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
