P0011 on a Subaru: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
You can usually drive a Subaru to a shop with P0011, but check the oil level first, and if the engine runs rough or the light flashes, have it towed.
What P0011 means on a Subaru
On a Subaru, P0011 means the AVCS variable valve timing system is advancing the intake camshaft on bank 1 further than the computer commanded. The camshaft is ahead of where it should be, usually because the AVCS oil control solenoid is sticking or oil pressure is low.
Is P0011 common on Subarus?
P0011 shows up on Subaru boxer engines in the Outback, Forester, Impreza, and Legacy. AVCS oil control solenoids can clog with dirty oil, and boxer engines can burn some oil at high mileage, so a low oil level is a common trigger.
Commonly reported on: Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle or hesitation, especially when cold

Common causes

- common: Overdue oil changes
- less common: Worn AVCS actuator
- less common: Timing chain stretch
