P0011 on a BMW: Causes, Fixes & Repair Cost
๐ Moderate severity ยท drivable
You can usually drive a BMW to a shop with P0011, but check the oil level first, and if the engine runs rough or the light flashes, have it towed.
What P0011 means on a BMW
On a BMW, P0011 means the VANOS variable valve timing system is advancing the intake camshaft on bank 1 further than the computer commanded. The camshaft is ahead of where it should be, usually because a VANOS solenoid is clogged or a VANOS unit is worn.
Is P0011 common on BMWs?
P0011 is common on BMW inline-6 engines like the N52, N54, and N55 in the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, and X5. VANOS solenoids are a known wear item and often fail from dirty oil, and low oil pressure or a worn VANOS unit can also set this code.
Commonly reported on: 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5.
